Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim’s first game ended in a 1-1 draw away at Ipswich Town.

If Manchester United had been really bold, Kieran McKenna could have been in the away dugout at Ipswich Town on Sunday.

The former Manchester United assistant coach is earning a reputation as one of the best up and coming managers in the business – but the Red Devils job came too soon for him this time around.

Ruben Amorim was the latest ‘chosen’ one, taking over from Erik ten Hag, and his spell as head coach is now underway, beginning with a 1-1 draw away at McKenna’s Ipswich.

McKenna on Andre Onana

Ruben Amorim’s opening game as Manchester United head coach was not great – but it could have been worse.

We noted ahead of the game that Amorim has the league’s most in-form goalkeeper, the current Golden Glove leader.

Onana was excellent and pulled off one outstanding save from Liam Delap, one of five total saves he made during the game.

Speaking post-game, McKenna told the Ipswich Star he was impressed with the Manchester United goalkeeper.

McKenna said: “I thought the first save from Liam was incredible. The save in the second half was probably the big one. He’s a good goalkeeper.”

He added that he was pleased with the way his team fought back, adding: “When you concede an early goal to Man United, with the motivation they were playing with today, the game could get away from you on another day. The main positive is it didn’t.”

Onana earning plaudits

Andre Onana was voted as Manchester United fans’ man of the match, with 60 per cent of the vote.

His outstanding save was hailed as ‘world class’ on the BBC, while head coach Ruben Amorim also reserved praise for Onana.

Amorim added that he was also pleased with Onana’s passing, completing 78 per cent of his passes during the game, helping United to build from the back.

While there is lots for Amorim to solve, Onana is not one of the issues, as he sorts through the winners and losers from his opening game.
