Manchester United star’s likely exit in 2025 has pundit dreaming of ‘ridiculous’ transfer

From Cristiano Ronaldo and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to Ruud van Nistelrooy, Manchester United have a history of bringing club legends back to Old Trafford.

But the Premier League giants are not the only ones who have, at times, found the opportunity to welcome back a prodigal son too good to turn down.

Copenhagen jumped at the chance to sign the legendary Brian Laudrup a decade after he left Denmark to light up the iconic arenas of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Daniel Agger spent nearly a decade at Liverpool between two spells at Brondby.

The prolific Preben Elkjaer, one of the greatest goalscorers in Danish history, finished his career at Vejle Boldklub. Allan Simonsen too, returning home a Bundesliga and Copa del Rey winner with Borussia Monchengladbach and Barcelona.

And as Christian Eriksen’s contract at Man United runs down – the veteran playmaker will be a free-agent in 2025 – could he look to wind down a fine career in the manner of Laudrup, Simonsen and co?

Manchester United are expected to let the 32-year-old go amid concerns that Eriksen is a bad fit for Ruben Amorim’s high-octane style.

And former Denmark international Per Frimman would like nothing more than for Eriksen to leave the Parken Stadium spellbound by his wand of a right foot while wearing the white shirt of FC Copenhagen.

Christian Eriksen’s likely Manchester United exit sparks Copenhagen dreams

“Some may say it’s ridiculous, but I don’t think so,” Frimann, capped 17 times by the Scandinavian nation in the 1980s, tells Viaplay. “I would like Christian Eriksen to come home to the Super League.

“I would really like to see what we have previously seen with Brian Laudrup, Preben Elkjaer, Allan Simonsen and Daniel Agger. I would like to see FC Copenhagen sign Christian Eriksen.”

Copenhagen, the richest and most successful club in Danish football, are perhaps the only team in the land who could either afford Eriksen, or be able to lure him back home in the first place.

The Lions are, after all, regulars in European competition. Copenhagen famously defeated Manchester United at the Parken back in 2023.

And Frimman believes that, while Eriksen earns £150,000-a-week at Old Trafford and would need to take a substantial pay cut, the most famous figure in Danish sports would quickly repay that investment.

“They are probably the ones [in the country] who have the best opportunity to [sign Eriksen],” Frimman adds.

“Listen here; if FCK has to go out and get some players and they are ready to pay 30 million [Danish Krone or £3 million], shouldn’t you just give a player who can go for free a good salary and then sell those 10 to 20,000 shirts?

“Financially, it can be positive to bring in a player of that calibre.”

Eriksen hopes to play a role at Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United

Eriksen was a target for the likes of Anderlecht and Ajax over the summer. The Belgian giants could not afford to meet the financial requirements, with the former Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan and Brentford ace also snubbing offers from America, Turkey and the Middle East.

Eriksen is excited about a fresh start under Ruben Amorim at Man United, meanwhile, regardless of how long it lasts.

“I haven’t focused on [my future] yet. Nor have I heard anything from the club,” Eriksen told reporters during a press conference while on international duty last week. “There are a lot of different things to look at right now.

“So it’s just about football now, and then we have to see where we stand in January and, for that matter, in the summer.

“I have not made any hopes or expectations about where I stand. When I return to Manchester, I will start from day one [under Amorim].

“When a new coach comes in, he will follow his own ideas and plans. Then, it may not be so important what you have done in the past. As a footballer, you just turn up, train and do what you can. Then, it is the coach who sets the team for the weekend.”
