Ian Wright shares why Ineos have done something ‘brilliant’ with Ruben Amorim ultimatum at Manchester United

Manchester United have appointed Ruben Amorim but one part of the Ineos approach has left Ian Wright seriously impressed.

It’s all change in the Manchester United dugout as the third international break of the season looms.

Erik ten Hag was sacked by United last week and Ruud van Nistelrooy finds himself in interim charge.

Ten Hag’s successor has already been chosen though with United appointing Ruben Amorim as the new head coach on Friday.

Amorim is still managing Sporting until the international break and we saw him demolish Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side 4-1 on Tuesday night.

This was the first time City have conceded four goals in a Champions League game in eight years.

Excitement around Amorim is high as United fans find hope in another new era at Old Trafford.

Ian Wright praises Ineos for Ruben Amorim deal

Sir Jim Ratclife and Ineos moved quickly to land their man as Amorim was picked out as the top target within hours of Ten Hag’s departure.

The 39-year-old has won two league titles as Sporting boss and established himself as one of the top young coaches in Europe.

Amorim faces a big task at United but will hopefully receive plenty of time to turn the club’s fortunes around.

United wasted no time in appointing Amorim and Ineos have now been praised by pundit Ian Wright.

Speaking on Stick To Football, Wright called the move for Amorim ‘brilliant’ having handed him an ultimatum.

Amorim wanted to take the job next summer in an ideal world, but Wright feels that United got it right with the approach by saying it was now or never.

Wright added that this was the first time Ineos really showed ‘intent’ and believes that Amorim now has time to assess his United squad before heading into the summer transfer window.

“I think him coming in at this stage, when they said ‘listen, you come now or it’s off the table’, I think that’s brilliant from them,” said Wright.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen them actually do something with such intent, saying ‘no, you come now’. No-one is expecting anything from United this season, no-one is expecting anything, so for him to have them from now until the end of the season instead of waiting until the end of the season, like he said he wanted to, then get to the summer and then start bringing people in. I think that he can see exactly what he’s got on a day-to-day basis,” he added.

How Ruben Amorim started at Sporting

Amorim’s last move was also during the season as he quit Braga to join Sporting in 2020.

Amorim was only able to manage one Sporting game before football was shelved due to the global COVID pandemic.

Football returned in Portugal in June and Amorim racked up five wins from seven, drawing the other two.

Amorim suffered his first defeat in a 2-0 loss at Porto before a draw with Vitoria Setubal in his 10th game in charge.

Amorim took 21 points from a possible 30 in his first 10 games and United fans would certainly take a similar start.

The Portuguese coach is inheriting a very inconsistent squad though and Sporting were certainly favourites in most of Amorim’s first 10 games.

A repeat performance would be a big ask but Amorim will just look to get his ideas across quickly and get United moving forward.

Elsewhere, Amorim is already interested in signing Sporting’s Geovany Quenda at United amid comparisons to Bukayo Saka.
