Ruben Amorim is set to become the manager of Manchester United in a matter of days but he chose not to watch their Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City.

Ruud van Nistelrooy took interim charge as Manchester United beat Leicester City 5-2 on Wednesday evening to book their spot in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The Red Devils have been drawn against Tottenham in the last eight, but by the time that clash comes around in December, Ruben Amorim will be the manager of Manchester United.

Amorim has agreed to join United and a full deal is now in place with Sporting Lisbon after his €10million (£8.3million) release clause was triggered.

United’s hierarchy hatched an ambitious plan for Amorim’s debut to come against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, but the 39-year-old is not set to take charge until the November international break.

Ruben Amorim did not watch Man Utd vs Leicester

Amorim’s United debut will be against Ipswich Town on November 24th, where he will come up against former United coach Kieran McKenna in the opposite dugout.

It means the 39-year-old has a couple of weeks to assess his soon-to-be squad and watch United in action under Van Nistelrooy.

Van Nistelrooy has three more games as interim before handing the keys over to Amorim next month, and Ten Hag’s former assistant made a bright start with an emphatic victory over Leicester at Old Trafford.

Amorim has now confessed, however, that he was not watching United on Wednesday evening.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Amorim explained that he spent the evening watching Estrela da Amadora and Premier League rivals Manchester City.

As quoted by O Jogo, Amorim said: “Yesterday I watched Estrela Amadora. I know the [Man United] result, but I watched Estrela.

“I also watched Manchester City, although there were some changes and we can’t make a great assessment.”

Ruben Amorim will face Pep Guardiola before joining Man United

Plenty of United supporters, myself included, tuned in on Tuesday to watch Sporting Lisbon beat Nacional as it was widely anticipated that it could be Amorim’s farewell match.

However, the final agreement struck by United means that Amorim actually has three fixtures left before he makes the trip to Manchester.

Amorim promised to speak about becoming United manager after Friday’s match against Estrela Amadora.

He will then face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Tuesday, November 5th before his final game against Braga on November 10th.

It explains why Amorim spent his Wednesday evening watching Estrela Amadora and City – although we expect he has also seen plenty of United’s win against Leicester.
