Manchester United fans name man of the match in 5-2 win vs Leicester, with over half the vote
Manchester United defeated Leicester City on Wednesday night as Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of his first game for the club.
For the first time in over two years, Manchester United were led out by a new manager, following Monday’s sacking of Erik ten Hag.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken charge on an interim basis, and his short spell as manager started off impressively with a seven-goal thriller.
United defeated Leicester City 5-2 at Old Trafford, with an attacking masterclass blowing Steve Cooper’s team away.
Two goals from Casemiro, two from Bruno Fernandes and then Alejandro Garnacho with one secured the victory for United and progression to the quarter-final.
Following the game, United fans had the luxury of several solid options to vote for as the man of the match.
Manchester United fans have a clear man of the match vs Leicester
After such an impressive victory, there is a selection of players who could have been nominated for man of the match.
However, for United fans, there was one overwhelming winner, as the man of the match vote on the club website revealed.
- Casemiro – 68 per cent
- Bruno Fernandes – 21 per cent
- Alejandro Garnacho – 4 per cent
- Manuel Ugarte – 3 per cent
- Marcus Rashford – 1 per cent
- No other player scored enough votes to have a percentage share.
Casemiro’s performance will be defined by his two goals, but he also impressed on the ball as he sprayed numerous long passes around the pitch.
The 32-year-old Brazilian also contributed defensively – although he can thank Manuel Ugarte for doing the dirty work that allowed him to push forward and grab the goals.
Ruud van Nistelrooy praises Casemiro
Despite an acknowledgement around fans that Casemiro should be moved on in the coming transfer windows, he continues to impress and this performance was the best he has had all season.
As quoted on the club website, Van Nistelrooy explained his thoughts about Casemiro’s goal and his character.
“The first one was an absolute beauty from Casemiro. I just enjoyed the moment, as it was in the top corner and an amazing goal. He’s an amazing person and player and it’s fantastic to have him around.”
Van Nistelrooy then continued to explain his delight at Casemiro’s display.
“I was delighted for Casemiro, the way he’s been training and helping the team, the club, it’s such an example. I’m delighted to have him around and going through difficult moments… He got a lot of criticism after the Liverpool game.”
After this outing, the chances of Casemiro starting against Chelsea on Sunday have skyrocketed – and we imagine Van Nistelrooy will make limited changes.
It is possible that Van Nistelrooy will have three more games at the helm – with this result being the ideal start to give some confidence ahead of this run.
