Porto striker Samu Omorodion could pile pressure on Erik ten Hag
Manchester United head to Porto for a crucial clash with manager Erik ten Hag under increasing pressure.
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United need performances and results, and in the last two games both have been missing.
United’s players will be going up against a Porto side in good form, sitting second in the league with six wins from seven games.
Porto did suffer a surprise Europa League defeat to Bodo/Glimt last week and they will be keen to put this right, and they will be led by in-form summer signing Samu Omorodion.
Samu Omorodion in form for Porto
Samu Omorodion will be Porto’s main dangerman after a superb start to the season following a dramatic summer.
Omorodion was on the books of Atletico Madrid and had been lined up for a move to Chelsea, alongside negotiations for Conor Gallagher to go the other way.
Fabrizio Romano even reported that Omorodion was set to undergo a medical with Chelsea and sign a seven-year deal.
Omorodion’s move to Chelsea fell through and they ended up signing Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid instead.
The young forward signed with Porto instead for a far cheaper deal which cost the Portuguese club just £12.7 million. They added a 100 million Euros release clause to his contract.
Omorodion has begun in excellent form for Porto, scoring five goals in five games so far – which include just three starts.
The 20-year-old played on loan at Alaves last season and their sporting director has described him as a complete forward.
Sergio Fernandez told A Bola: “His top speed also allows him to win practically every duel, and his physical ability makes him dominant when playing with his back to the attack.
“We are looking at a player who, if he continues this process of improvement and has continuity, will be one of the best forwards in European football.”
Manchester United defence under pressure
Manchester United’s defence has provided a mixed output this season, delivering clean sheets against the likes of Fulham and Southampton – but found wanting against Liverpool and Tottenham.
Porto won 4-0 at the weekend and are in good form, and Omorodion will be a clear threat for United to attempt to cope with.
Erik ten Hag’s side have been making basic errors at the back, with full-back Diogo Dalot rightly coming in for criticism after his role in the opening goal at the weekend.
If United’s centre-backs can keep Omorodion quiet then they have a chance. But if his unstoppable form continues, then it will pile the pressure onto Erik ten Hag.
