Aliou Cissé leaves Senegal after 9 rich years
After nine years at the head of the Lions, Aliou Cissé, emblematic coach of Senegal, sees his adventure come to an end. The Ministry of Sports has decided not to extend his contract, which expired on August 31, 2024, putting an end to an era marked by historic highs and lows that have sparked controversy in recent months.
Aliou Cissé will have spent 9 years at the head of the Lions.
Appointed in 2015, Aliou Cissé quickly gave momentum to a Senegalese team in search of its first continental crown. The high point of his mandate was the historic victory at CAN 2021. This coronation allowed Senegal to win its first continental title, after decades of unsuccessful attempts. This feat cemented his place in the pantheon of Senegalese football figures, as did his qualification for two World Cups, in 2018 and 2022, where Senegal reached the round of 16.
An indisputable record but mixed results in recent months
Under his reign, Cissé recorded 70 victories, 24 draws and only 13 defeats. Figures that would make many coaches on the continent green with envy. However, the last period of his mandate was marked by performances considered disappointing, notably in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup and the 2025 CAN, but also due to a style of play criticized by part of the public. The lack of fluidity and recent results have led to a gradual disenchantment between supporters and the national team, despite Cissé's aura.

Growing popular pressure
According to sources close to the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), the decision not to renew Cissé's contract was influenced by popular pressure and recurring criticism of the style of play and match management. The Ministry of Sports, which largely finances the activities of the national team, decided in favor of a change. A confidential letter addressed to the FSF put an end to the hopes of a one-year extension that the latter was considering.

This decision comes at a crucial moment, just a few days before the publication of the list of players for the CAN 2025 qualifications. The Federation must now work to appoint a successor, with a preference shown for a Senegalese coach, according to the first information.
The legacy of Aliou Cissé
Despite this abrupt end, Aliou Cissé leaves an indelible legacy. Former captain of the national team, he was able to integrate young talents while maintaining a solid base of experienced players. Under his mandate, Senegal became an indisputable force in African football, and its victories resonated well beyond the country's borders.
Senegal now finds itself at a turning point. The page for Cissé is turned, but the challenge remains immense for his successor, who will have to revitalize the team and above all rekindle the flame between the Lions and their public. Cissé, for his part, leaves office with his head held high, strong from his successes and the capital role he played in the rise of Senegalese football on the international scene.
