James Scanlon is an attacking midfielder for Manchester United’s academy side who is building up quite a reputation.

Unlike the struggles of Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United first team, the Red Devils’ under-18 side is flying and could be described as one of the best academy sides in England.

As for the United first team, the Red Devils lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford over the weekend and there have been calls for manager Ten Hag to bring in a few of the academy players.

One of these is James Scanlon, who netted four goals for United’s under-18 against Blackburn Rovers, and the English teenager looks to be a real talent.

Who is James Scanlon?

James Scanlon is an attacking midfielder or winger who is currently playing for United’s under-18 side and has thoroughly impressed for the Red Devils.

Despite being just 18 years of age, Scanlon has earned six caps for the Gibraltar national team and has scored one goal, which was against Liechtenstein in the UEFA Nations League.

Where and when was James Scanlon born?

Scanlon was born on the 18th of September, 2006. Despite having a rather English name, and being born in England, Scanlon represents Gibraltar at a national level.

A product of the Derby County and Manchester United academy, Scanlon is the first player to play for the Red Devils from Gibraltar.

Where did Manchester United get James Scanlon from?

Scanlon was brought to Old Trafford from Derby County. Amid growing financial uncertainty at Pride Park, the Midlands club had to make tough financial decisions and one of them allowed Scanlon to move to Manchester. He joined as part of a three-player deal along with Sekou Kaba and Malachi Sharpe.

Scanlon signed his first professional deal at Old Trafford in May of 2024 and certainly looks to be a bright talent.

Scanlon is 179cm tall, which is the equivalent of 5 foot 10 inches.

The teenager can play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger so 5 foot 10 inches tall is around average for a player in these positions.

How good is James Scanlon

Bringing in academy players into the United first team is always a risk but with Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo excelling, the academy side has excelled in the first team.

Scanlon has been prolific for the United under-18 side and could well be on the verge of either an under-21 spot or a first-team place. He scored four goals in a win over Blackburn.

Scanlon was United’s 2024 tour wildcard, but was used as an emergency right-back, and perhaps in the second half of the Premier League season, the teenager could be given a chance in his preferred role.
