Man Utd fans all agree with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s comment after latest defeat, they think it’s aged like wine
Three wins in nine games, a daunting fixture list waiting, and the performance levels coming crashing down in the latest defeat, that’s the situation facing Erik ten Hag now.
It looks a world away from the 7-0 win vs Barnsley, or that performance vs Crystal Palace immediately following the game.
Now, it’s like a clock is ticking on his future, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s latest stance on his job security not inspiring much confidence either.
That is a complete 180-degree turn from the executive team’s statement of confidence in Erik ten Hag and with time, that trust is only dwindling further.
In the meantime, fans have gotten a hold of a comment made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Manchester United during his time in charge which he was ridiculed for.
That’s not the prevailing sentiment now…
It was 2021, and Solskjaer, facing pressure from the media for being a “nearly team” when it comes to winning trophies was reaching a feverish pitch.
He would leave United without winning any, and when Ten Hag came in and won the Carabao Cup in his first season, a long-awaited drought was broken.
Solskjaer’s tactical limitation was on full display as Ten Hag had gotten United the elusive silverware, strengthened further when, against all odds, United went one better in the second season and secured the FA Cup.
However, with the team continuing to struggle in the league, Solskjaer’s comments have proven to be prophetic.
Ten Hag was already fighting against those comments as he keeps repeating his “two trophies in two years” line, but now, a clear winner is emerging.
The Norwegian had said then that sometimes trophies can hide the fact that you’re still struggling and that is the perfect summation of United’s predicament right now.
Man Utd fans on Solskjaer’s comment
Needless to say, the latest loss to Tottenham broke something in the fanbase as they finally look like they’ve had enough.
The performance was unacceptable and currently, the feeling is that many fans would happily trade a trophy this season for sustained progress in the league.
United fans took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and said Solskjaer’s comments in 2021 are prophetic now, adding that they were perhaps too harsh in their assessment at the time.
“Of course he was right, they hounded him out because he didn’t win one,” said one fan.
Another posted: “Ole was spot on trophies alone don’t signify a return to form. Consistency and progress in the league are what really matter. It’s frustrating to see that struggle continue.”
“They called him stupid but see now,” said another, as a fourth echoed similar sentiments, saying just three words which summed it up- “Absolutely spot on!”.
A fifth said that the fall of standards has a lot to do with it, recalling Ten Hag’s attitude after winning the FA Cup: “I wanted Erik gone after he started moving like he over achieved after FA cup win, if you as a manger didn’t realized you had a bad season despite the trophy then how can the team improve?”
That remained the prevailing fan sentiment, as thousands posted the same, agreeing with that assessment now.
It is up to Ten Hag now to say trophies are a bouncing board for sustained success, not a success in itself. Solskjaer is winning that debate as it stands.
