Ashley Young dropped his clear-cut verdict on the performances of two Manchester United players after the 3-0 defeat to Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Manchester United are sat in 12th place in the Premier League table after managing only two wins and a draw in their opening six league matches of the season.

The Red Devils were simply outclassed against Tottenham at Old Trafford and Erik ten Hag has faced further criticism over his side’s poor run of form in the league.

Brennan Johnson opened the scoring inside five minutes for Spurs before Dejan Kulusevski doubled Tottenham’s advantage early in the second half.

Dominic Solanke ensured that Ange Postecoglou’s men sealed all three Premier League points after finding the back of the net against United.

United struggled to climb back into the contest against Spurs and ended the first half with only 10 men after club captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off.

Young singles out two Man Utd stars

Speaking on Sky Sports, former Manchester United star Ashley Young insisted that two players under Erik ten Hag showed “no confidence” with what they were doing.

Ten Hag started summer signing Joshua Zirkzee in attack with Bruno Fernandes behind him, with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho out on the wings.

Marcus Rashford came off in the second half and was replaced by Rasmus Hojlund, while Alejandro Garnacho saw out the full 90 minutes against Tottenham.

Young pointed out that both of the United wingers were more likely to head “back and play the safe pass” rather than “attack the space in behind” the Spurs defence.

“I think it just showed today, where you’ve got the two wingers going one vs one and instead of going to attack the space in behind, they’d rather go back and play the safe pass,” he said, as per the Metro.

“That’s when you know you’ve got a winger with no confidence.

“As a winger previously as well, when you’re here, when you see a one vs one, that’s when your eyes light up, that’s your time to shine.

“When players are not doing that, turning it down and wanting to go backwards, it’s not the way to be doing it.

“It’s one of those things. They are going to have to have a meeting between themselves and work out what is going wrong.”

Ten Hag sends message to Man Utd players

United had a disappointing week at Old Trafford after the Red Devils blew a 1-0 advantage against FC Twente in their opening Europa League match of the season.

Ten Hag has insisted that United can “bounce back” after their latest setbacks, despite facing mounting pressure over his side’s run of form.

“Of course, there’s always a new game, there will be a new day, and it’s also obvious,” he said at his post-match press conference.

“You have to learn as a team – it can’t happen in four days now, twice, [that] the defender of the opponent can dribble through the whole park without being stopped.

“Then things are impossible at top football, you can’t make such mistakes, so definitely, we have to address this. But we will bounce back.”
