This sad episode tarnished the end of the derby, where both teams remained defensive for a large part of the match. However, while Courtois, a former Atlético player, ostensibly celebrated this goal by provoking the supporters, the situation escalated.

The Atlético public could not stand the attitude of the Belgian goalkeeper and reacted by throwing projectiles.
