Omari Forson made the brave call to leave Manchester United in the summer and chose to move to Italy.

Manchester United did not want to lose Omari Forson. But when the winger’s contract expired, Forson turned down the club’s offer of an extension.

United had put effort into Forson’s development, with Erik ten Hag handing him a first team debut in January, and even bringing him off the bench in the FA Cup semi-final.

Forson felt he was not going to get first team opportunities on a regular basis, having been overtaken late in the season by Amad Diallo, and chose to try and find his own path.

Omari Forson makes first Monza start

There were other Premier League sides interested in Omari Forson, yet he chose to move to Italy, joining Serie A side Monza.

Forson made his first start this week in the Coppa Italia, and played all 90 minutes as his side beat Brescia 3-1 at home.

The 20-year-old was selected in an attacking midfield role as Monza lined up with a 3-4-2-1 formation, and helped as his side raced into a three-goal lead by half-time.

While he did not get on the scoresheet or assist any of the goals, Forson proved his composure as he did not give the ball away once over the entire game.

Forson completed 41 of 41 passes, also landing two shots on target, while working hard off the ball, making five ball recoveries for his side.

Patient progress for Forson

Omari Forson has needed to be a little patient since joining Monza, waiting to earn a spot in Alessandro Nesta’s side.

Forson made his Serie A debut the weekend prior, coming off the bench for the final 20 minutes as Monza slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Bologna.

A brief, yet lively display, was enough to earn his first start in the Coppa Italia, and Forson can now be confident he is beginning to make the breakthrough.

This coming weekend Forson’s Monza take on Napoli away from home, where the Manchester United youngster will be reunited with former teammate and fellow academy graduate Scott McTominay.

McTominay scored his first goal for Napoli in the Coppa Italia, netting with his first touch after coming off the substitute’s bench.

Forson would love the opportunity to upstage McTominay, and he will hope he has now earned the chance to do so.
