Untouchable Man Utd star is struggling this season, Erik ten Hag now has major decision ahead
Manchester United started the Europa League with a stumble after throwing away two points against Twente at Old Trafford.
After the draw, fingers will be pointed at individual errors made by Harry Maguire and Christian Eriksen which gave the Dutch side a pretty clear-cut chance to score.
However, it cannot be pinned on these two, with Erik ten Hag making several mistakes in the game and Manchester United ultimately just not being good enough in attack.
Among those to struggle was Bruno Fernandes who has had a terrible start to the season in the number 10 position for United.
Compared with his usual glowing standards and even with the likes of Eriksen, Bruno has been very poor – which could present a substantial issue for Erik ten Hag.
Bruno Fernandes’ struggles continue at Manchester United
For the past few seasons, Bruno Fernandes has been the star man for Manchester United – yet this season it couldn’t be further from the truth as he is creating a measly 1.23 chances per game in the league, a figure beaten by both Alejandro Garnacho (1.96 chances created per 90) and Amad Diallo (3.2 chances created per 90).
The Portuguese magnifico has been off it all campaign and is a player who looks seriously out of touch with the game right now – perhaps due to exhaustion after the last few years at Old Trafford.
Against Twente, these struggles only continued as he was one of United’s worst players on the pitch and really should have been withdrawn if it wasn’t for Ten Hag’s refusal to ever take his captain off, no matter how out of form he is.
Bruno continued as he left off against Crystal Palace, losing possession 19 times against the Eredivisie side.
Despite all of United’s possession, Bruno created just one chance in 90 minutes – while he was also moved to the right wing when surely the better idea would have been playing a winger there – rather than a tired Bruno who was completely in-effectual.
All of this is potentially leading to Ten Hag having a massive decision to make in the near future.
Erik ten Hag could be forced into big decision
For Bruno, these performances can only go on so long before Ten Hag is forced into making a decision over whether the United No.8 starts or not.
The argument for the Portugal international starting games this season is wearing thin at the moment, with Eriksen out-performing him in the last few games.
Meanwhile, after coming off the bench against Twente in the 79th minute, Mason Mount created the same amount of chances as Bruno managed in the whole game.
Both of these players are good enough to be starting games in the 10 position and Mount cost £55m so Ten Hag must trust him at some point to put in the performances the club paid for.
So if Bruno does not improve and soon, Ten Hag might be forced into the massive call that would be dropping his captain – at least until he finds his brilliance once again.
