Manchester United defender Harry Maguire wasted no time in reacting to a message from one England teammate after the end of the September international break.

Harry Maguire was forced to miss Euro 2024 in Germany in the summer due to a calf injury, despite being a key player for former England manager Gareth Southgate.

Gareth Southgate stepped down from his role at England in the aftermath of Euro 2024, with the Three Lions suffering a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final.

Lee Carsley was appointed interim England manager after the departure of Southgate and took charge of the Three Lions for the September international break.

Maguire returned to international duty for England during the break and Lee Carsley used the former Manchester United captain in the win over the Republic of Ireland.

The 31-year-old United centre-back started in the heart of defence alongside Marc Guehi and played 85 minutes for England before he was replaced by John Stones.

Following on from the 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Harry Maguire dropped to the bench for the match against Finland.

Lee Carsley’s men picked up their second consecutive Nations League win earlier this week with their 2-0 victory over Finland at Wembley.

Maguire was an unused substitute in the Nations League encounter, with Harry Kane’s brace sealing all three points for the Three Lions against Finland.

The United star took to social media to celebrate his return to international duty with the Three Lions and the strong start England made with their Nations League campaign.

“Enjoyable camp with the lads, perfect start to the Nations League,” he wrote on Instagram.

Responding to the post, Arsenal star Declan Rice wrote: “Love it, Tony.”

Manchester City star Jack Grealish left laughing emojis on Declan Rice’s comment before Maguire simply responded by posting a shield emoji.

Maguire at Man Utd this season

Maguire has made four appearances across all competitions for United this season, including starting two Premier League matches in the first three fixtures.

Erik ten Hag has seen a tough start to the 2024-25 Premier League season, with United only picking up three out of a possible nine points so far.

United travel away to the St Mary’s on Saturday for their Premier League clash against Southampton, with kick-off slated for 12:30pm UK time.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Thursday, Erik ten Hag believes that United’s season will be defined at the end of the campaign rather than the start.

“We will see where we are in May next year,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“It’s very early in the season and it’s about winning trophies, being as high as possible, of course, in the league.

“Do everything to win every game and then we will see in May where we are and then judge.”
