Real Madrid officially announced this Friday the extension of Andriy Lunin's contract until 2030.

Lunin signed a six-year extension with Real Madrid, with his contract set to expire this summer, suggesting he would leave on a free. However, the situation has changed dramatically in recent days. Since April, the player has been advised by agent Jorge Mendes and has said he feels strong enough to compete with Thibaut Courtois.

Despite the limited prospects of playing time, Lunin has chosen to stay. The contract has been slightly adjusted in light of recent media reports: it is now for six years instead of four, with a modest salary increase.

This does not change Carlo Ancelotti's plans, however. Courtois remains indispensable as long as he is fit to play. He has returned to his best form after his injury, and since retiring from international duty with Belgium (as long as Domenico Tedesco remains coach), he has used the breaks to recover, thus avoiding a build-up of fatigue.

Lunin wants to compete with Courtois

Lunin nevertheless believes that he has the skills to compete with Courtois for the starting spot, and perhaps even replace him when the Belgian decides to leave the club. Although this is not yet on the agenda, it will eventually become a reality. Courtois has just celebrated his 32nd birthday and his contract ends in 2026.

Furthermore, this contract extension for Lunin does not completely close the door to a departure in the coming summers. However, with this new agreement, if the Ukrainian were to leave the club, he would no longer do so for free.
