Zinedine Zidane, is it over? The legend faces a decisive turning point
The future of Zinedine Zidane, one of the icons of French football, continues to spark heated debate.
Since leaving Real Madrid in 2021, the former number 10 of the French team has been increasingly absent from the European coaching scene. This prolonged absence leads some to wonder about the rest of his career.
Could Zidane be drawing a line under his coaching career? This is a hypothesis recently raised by Christophe Dugarry, his long-time friend. Speaking on RMC, the 1998 world champion did not rule out the possibility of no longer seeing Zidane on the bench.
“Yes, it is possible”
“Everyone speaks for him,” Dugarry said. “The rare times Zidane has spoken, he has shown an interest in the French team. He is at least consistent on this point. He has been said to want to sign for Italy, England or Bayern Munich, but he has never responded. Where I agree with Jean-Michel Larqué is that we might never see Zizou as a coach again. Yes, that is a possibility.”
Reading between the lines, it appears that Zidane, as during his playing career, remains guided by emotion. Despite rumors sending him to Paris, Manchester or Munich, he has not taken the step for any club. However, the French team remains his ultimate dream. “Zizou is still interested in the French team. If he has to take up a position, his greatest ambition remains to become coach of the Blues,” Dugarry had specified. For his fans, the wait will continue a little longer, because the position he covets is not yet free.
