Kylian Mbappé, it's over!
Kylian Mbappé can now smile after a favorable decision by the legal committee of the French Professional Football League (LFP). Paris Saint-Germain, his former club, was ordered to pay the sum of 55 million euros to its former player. This sum represents arrears of bonuses and three months of unpaid wages between April and June 2024.
Since leaving Paris Saint-Germain to join Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappé had initiated proceedings to claim his arrears of payment. The French striker, who left the capital club in the summer of 2024, had accumulated 308 appearances in Parisian colors and scored 256 goals during his stay. Despite this sporting success, a financial dispute tarnished the end of his collaboration with PSG.
Last Wednesday, an attempt at mediation was proposed by the French League in order to resolve the dispute amicably. However, Mbappé refused this option, preferring that the case be judged by the LFP's legal commission. After examining the arguments of both parties, the commission rendered a judgment in favor of the player this Thursday. It considered that PSG had not respected the contractual terms agreed with Mbappé.
The dispute is mainly based on arrears of bonuses and unpaid salaries. Indeed, the striker was demanding bonuses and salaries for the months of April, May and June 2024, for a total of 55 million euros. PSG, for its part, believed that Mbappé should waive these payments, based on a supposed oral agreement between the two parties. This agreement would have stipulated that the player would give up certain bonuses and salaries in the event of his departure without transfer compensation. However, the legal committee ruled that this oral agreement was not valid and that PSG had to honor the terms of the written contract, signed on May 21, 2022, and approved by the LFP.
According to Kylian Mbappé, one of the reasons for this dispute is related to the reduction in his playing time during his last months at PSG. After announcing his departure at the end of the season, Mbappé saw his participation on the pitch drastically reduced. This change was seen as a disguised sanction from the Parisian club, which hoped that the player would give up his financial demands. This situation amplified the tensions between the two parties, leading to this legal dispute.
According to the daily L'Equipe, following this decision, Paris Saint-Germain has eight days to pay the amount owed to Kylian Mbappé. In its judgment, the legal committee ordered the Parisian club to pay the full 55 million euros within eight days, including unpaid salaries and ethics bonuses associated with his contract. This decision puts an end to months of speculation and fruitless negotiations between the two parties. It also marks a symbolic victory for Kylian Mbappé, who left PSG after seven successful years of service, but whose end was marred by this financial dispute.
Despite the controversy, Kylian Mbappé's time at Paris Saint-Germain will go down in the club's annals. With 256 goals scored in 308 appearances, he was one of the main architects of Parisian successes, whether in Ligue 1 or the Champions League. His partnership with Neymar and Lionel Messi marked one of the most feared attacking trios in Europe. However, this hasty departure and this financial dispute will undoubtedly have tarnished the relationship between the French striker and his former club.
By joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2024, Mbappé has turned a new page in his career, aspiring to new challenges in Spain. But this legal victory against PSG is a reminder that, despite the disagreements at the end of the process, he will have been able to enforce his rights until the end.
