After arriving at Manchester United full of high hopes in his second stint, Cristiano Ronaldo is clearly still hurt at the way it turned out.

Just last week he took a subtle dig at former boss Erik ten Hag, and now in a more open interview, Cristiano Ronaldo has taken a more open shot at the current Red Devils manager.

Ronaldo has lots of grievances with the way his United exit turned out, but this latest criticism is aimed at Erik ten Hag’s alleged lack of ambition.

United are left competing for a top four place, trying to gradually climb back up the mountain after finishing in eighth last season.

Ronaldo believes Erik ten Hag should be aiming to win the title, at all times, and not settling for anything less.

Ronaldo swipe at Ten Hag

Cristiano Ronaldo has conducted an interview with former teammate Rio Ferdinand, with snippets released ahead of the full video.

BBC Sport relay Ronaldo’s comments: “The coach says they cannot compete to win the League and Champions League.

“As Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the Premier League or Champions League.

“Mentally say maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try. You have to try.”

The media are gunning for Erik ten Hag after the Red Devils boss just about survived last season, after ending by winning the FA Cup. In the league United finished eighth.

This season has begun poorly, with United losing two of the opening three games. The team are in 14th place, already ceding a six-point advantage to City and Liverpool.

Ronaldo’s comments place even more pressure on the Manchester United boss, and will no doubt become a topic at his pre-Southampton press conference.

With supporters frustrated at the start to the season too, Ronaldo’s comments only serve to whip up the ongoing frenzy which surrounds the United manager after poor results.

Erik ten Hag has insisted United can win the league

On the face of it, Cristiano Ronaldo’s comments would seem fair. The Manchester United manager should be wanting to win the Premier League.

Yet this is also exactly what Erik ten Hag has insisted he aims to do, as recently as the 2024/25 season.

Speaking in August prior to United’s opening game, Erik ten Hag made crystal clear his goals for the upcoming campaign.

Ten Hag is quoted via The Guardian: “With the two trophies we won more than any other club, apart from City, in England.

“We are confident, we have a good team, we have a good squad. We have to be more consistent and we want to win every competition in which we are taking part, definitely also the Premier League.”

Ten Hag’s comments speak quite clearly about his ambition. It’s there in black and white, he set the goal to win the Premier League.

Doing it, or even getting close, is another matter entirely – but to question Ten Hag’s ambition is unfair, as it is not accurate.
