After announcing his withdrawal from the German national team, Manuel Neuer is considering…
After announcing his international retirement, Manuel Neuer is now fully focused on Bayern Munich. His contract with the Bavarian club runs until June 2025, but the 38-year-old goalkeeper's future remains uncertain.
Bayern boss Jan-Christian Dreesen has made it clear that there are no ongoing talks over a contract extension at the moment. Negotiations will not begin until spring 2025 and will depend on Neuer's performance and fitness.
According to the FCB Inside media outlet, which is close to Bayern and quotes Bild, Neuer is said to have left the national team partly because his future with Bayern remains open. The 2014 World Cup winner is said to have discussed this decision with coach Julian Nagelsmann. Neuer is said to want to extend his career beyond next season and convince the Munich management to offer him a new contract because of his good performances. Nagelsmann and his teammates, however, wanted to be able to plan the future of the national team goalkeepers until the World Cup in two years.
The German coach is therefore considering making Marc-Andre ter Stegen the new number one. If Neuer had continued to play for the national team, it would have complicated long-term planning for the 2026 World Cup, especially if his contract with Bayern was not extended next summer.
It is worth noting that despite his retirement from the national team, Neuer leaves the door open for a possible return. Bild reports that if the national team needed a goalkeeper before the 2026 World Cup, Neuer would be willing to return to help the team.
