Real Madrid ruined? The terrible revelation 13 days after Mbappé's official announcement
The arrival of Kylian Mbappé at Real Madrid has pushed the Spanish club to take out a loan from the Bank of Spain, after Florentino Perez had been negotiating since January.
This transfer, one of the most anticipated in recent years, was made official after long months of speculation. After seven years at PSG, Mbappé joined Real Madrid, a major acquisition for a club that had just won the Champions League and now welcomes one of the best players in the world. This move is all the more impressive because the French player arrived on a free transfer, which means that Real Madrid paid PSG nothing for this transfer.
It would be naive to believe that Real Madrid got Kylian Mbappé for free. As is often the case with free players, the Merengues paid a substantial signing bonus. According to Spanish and French media, this bonus would amount to around 130 million euros, a colossal sum that goes directly into the player's pockets. To make this recruitment possible, the Madrid management had to activate several economic levers.
A bonus spread over 5 years
According to the Spanish media VozpopuliReal Madrid had to significantly extend its credit lines to finance Kylian Mbappé's salary and bonus. In short, under the direction of Florentino Perez, the Madrid club took out a loan of 130 million euros. This sum allowed for some flexibility in the face of expenses related to Mbappé's arrival, as soon as he was presented. Already affected by the economic difficulties due to Covid, the club had borrowed 395 million euros from the bank. Vozpopuli reports that Florentino Perez had been negotiating these conditions since January. The club has also started to repay part of the debt related to the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
The club's treasury has been significantly reduced, reaching 82 million euros as of June 30, 2024, the lowest amount in 20 years, after a decrease of 46 million euros. Regarding Kylian Mbappé, the signing bonus will be paid over five years, in agreement with the player. Real Madrid hopes that Mbappé's arrival will also lead to an increase in its turnover, in addition to the completion of the work on the new Bernabéu. Mbappé, in addition to his performances on the pitch, will also have to shine on the marketing front.
